There is some truth to the
saying that
"All development is self-development."
However, there is a greater truth when it comes
to supervisory training: All development needs the genuine
support of top management and the active involvement of a human
resource professional.
Linking PIN

Supervisors occupy the most dificult and highly
critical position in the organizational heirarchy. They are the
only ones who must function at a dual interface - relating on
the one hand to the rank-and-file operatives below them, and on
the other hand to the policy-oriented managers above them.
Sink or Swim
Few supervisors have the inclination, knowledge
or resources to provide for their own development. Thus, they
are dependent upon the guidance, instruction, and structured
support that only a human resources professional can give.
Otherwise, it can easily become a "sink or swim" situation.
Three out of four have risen from the ranks and
rarely establish the goals of the organization they serve.
Their upward mobility is severely limited. Yet it is ultimately
their efforts that ignite or difuse the productive spirit of
the people they supervise.
Little Knowledge Is
Dangerous
Little knowledge coupled with too much
self-confidence is definitely a dangerous combination. Majority
of the supervisors project a perilously high degree of
confidence in their managerial knowledge and skills. However,
their self-assessment of capability over a long list of vital
job requirements are suspect. Data in this area appear to be
useful in determining training needs only as a measure of
self-confidence.
Thus . . . Successful training
and development of supervisors will be achieved only through a
systematic analysis of conditions in each organization and the
rigorous design of practical programs for improvement.
